- "0 trans fat". If a food item contains "partially hydrogenated oil", "hydrogenated vegetable oil", "shortening" , it will have trans fat. So don't always fall for the cover!
- "Sugar free foods". They may not have sugar in them but believe me, they sure do make up for it with the carbs, fat or calories! Sometimes sugar- free items are actually worse for you!
- "Reduced fat" or "Fat free". I always go straight to the fat grams when looking at a label however; it isn't so much the amount for me but rather the type of fat. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are found in things such as healthy peanut butter brands and are very good for you as well as filling. Trans and saturated fats is what you should fear. Some sat. fats, such as the ones found and coconut oil can also be a nutritious thing to add to your diet, however.
- "All natural" products. Keep in mind that just because they are natural, doesn't mean that they are okay. I've noticed that many "100% natural" food products are hazardous to your diet!
- "Made with whole grains". Notice it didn't say "made will all whole- grains". Look that the label, is it made with ALL whole grains or did they add just enough to call it a whole grain?
- "Free range" eggs. Local farmers are your best bet when it comes to free range eggs. Why? Because though they are labeled "free range", it only means that the factory had a open door chicken cage, it doesn't mean that they used it. I don't know about you, but I would rather eat an egg that was from a healthily raised and happy chicken rather than one that was cooped up all their life in a itty bitty cage where all the hen could do was sit.

Exercise for beginners
Exercise is such an awesome way to get an extra boost of confidence... for so many reasons. It helps tone and studies even show that those who exercise relieve stress. There are so many different ways to get exercise too... even if its just walking your dog, jump roping, messing around with your siblings or running around your block a couple times. My most favorite way to get exercise is.... well, running. Most people hate running, but
it can actually be quite enjoyable.
How you can start too:
- Get some cute athletic clothes! It's so much easier to work out if you are doing it in clothes that make you feel pretty =)
- Don't over do it! To maintain your current weight as a teen, you only need 10 minutes of exercise a day. If you're goal is to loose weight, I would recommend getting 30 minutes of exercise daily and consuming less than 1,500 calories a day.
- Running, walking, hopscotch, jump rope, hula- hoops, get the ball rolling (dribble around a soccer ball or basketball), jump on the trampoline, rollerskate, go rock climbing, get to the pool (if you aren't totally freaked out by walking around in a bikini like i am) and swim... diving contests, football with your bro's, ride your bike, rent a canoe or kayak out on the lake, pull weeds from your garden, ride a horse, take a hike, paint your room, play dodgeball, dance around in your room, beach volleyball... oh my goodness, the possibilities are endless.
- If you are interesting in running... here are my tips for you:
Start off for the first couple weeks running 10 minutes a day, build up to 15, then 20, and so forth. Take it easy and if your body needs a break, give it a break... especially if you are not familiar with this kind of cardio. Running can be relatively boring at first, especially if you're doing it on a treadmill so, grab your ipod, phone or mp3 and put all your fave songs on it. Running outside in the morning when the sun is rising is beautiful and very entertaining as well. Drink 2 cups of water before a run and a banana... this will help ease any cramps you may get during your run. Good luck =)
